Hobby Lobby Easel With NO Instructions

Those who really know me are aware of my mechanical abilities (they suck). I feel comfortable inside your computer, but "some assembly required" scares the bejeebers out of me. At any rate, I've been looking for a simple easel and found one at Hobby Lobby. It also said, "assembly required", but really, how tough could an easel be?

We got the easel home, opened the package and looked for directions. Directions? Where are the directions? Perhaps they're printed on the back of the label? No - there are NO directions. So, if anybody else buys this product and discovers there are no directions, here are a few hints...

#1 - lay the legs on the floor. Each leg consists of 2 parts. The with the "cap" on it is the bottom. Place the parts so that the round part is facing toward you and and the "little shelf" it makes is also in front. Do this 3 times... (3 legs).

Assembly the legs and then using a longer screw hook them together as illustrated in the above photo.

What comes next took a while and I had to call upon an engineer's daughter (my wife) to assist in figuring this out. She also excels at putting together puzzels where puzzles give me a headache. At any rate, we had 2 pieces of wood left - each with a hole in the middle. We tried to line up those holes every which way with no success and then - we (she) discovered that the two pieces that form the shelf are placed on the outside of the legs and the other one behind the legs. Then you use the long bolt "thingy" (technical term) with the loop at the end to connect the two pieces together and you then clip the chain to the loop as seen in the next 2 illustrations.

And, now a finished easel. I almost want to go out and buy another one just so I can put it together with ease...

Mine came partially assembled, the wing nuts go in the front for easy access to adjust the position.

Thank you! Thank you! I just bought this same easel, and I was VERY frustrated when I couldn't figure out how to put it together. I would never have figured it out without your blog. Thanks again!!

LOL! I just bought the same easel and was incredibly frustrated. I felt certain the manufacturers had screwed up and that there was no way this thing would go together right. Behind AND in front of the legs! That's the secret! Thank you so much for taking the time to post this!

Also, I want to include the model number of the easel, A13144, so other people can find your blog!

Thank you! I am so glad you had these instructions posted with pictures!!! I just bought 5 of these easels and spent the last 45 minutes screwing and unscrewing because I just couldn't figure this out!!! Now I'm just hoping it can fold easily? Should I be so lucky?

Thank you SO much! After opening the package and finding no directions, I automatically went into panic mode! I went to Hobby Lobby's web site, which is a very sad excuse for a web site. Nothing..nada. I said to myself "what are the odds Goggle can find me directions?" Your blog came right up and within 5 minutes I now have an easel! Thanks SO much! You are the "hero of the day!"

Thank you sooooo much! I too searched the little bag for the directions and became annoyed when I found none. I'm so glad I stumbled upon your blog.

Thank you so much for this , I got this cheap easel of another brand for like 12 dollars but the directions it came with where awful and if you looked closely didn't even show the same pieces the easel came with, I used your directions to improvise , even using craft wire to create a loop where i needed one (the brand had some wierd loop you must have needed a power tool to use or something), the pictures you took helped me so much to figure out what it was supposed to look like I was totally confused when i started XD

Thank you sooo much for putting your instructions online. I am putting together several of these easels to use at a funeral tomorrow for my daughter's best friend of 12 years. She was taken suddenly at the age of 19. So you can imagine how frustrated I was to see no instructions and the desperate need to get these put together for the family. God bless you!

Your instructions saved my day. I am using one of these very easels for a display of pictures at the 50th Wedding Anniversary Party for my parents. I spent 45 minutes desperately trying to get all the pieces together without instructions and was becoming very frustrated. When I saw your pic, I instantly knew what I was doing wrong. Thank you so very much.

OMG! A MILLION THANKS! At first we were in disbelief that we had no instructions. You SAVED my marriage with your instructions. My husband and I really SHOULD NOT assemble things together - EVER!

Anonymous said...

Hahahahahaha...i read your article to my husband and it was just like what we said!! Thanks for the instruction and the laugh!!!

Thank you sooo much. It is
Christmas morn and my husband was trying to put together the exact easel from Hobby Lobby. I took a chance online and found your blog. Now we have a white Christmas and an easel to help with our Pictionary game playing tonight!!!

Thanks for this, mate, you're the best. I dumped out the bag, looked at the pieces, and said, you have got to be f- kidding me!!!

OMG thank you so much! i have no idea why it didnt come with directions and its not some SUPER simple construction piece either. You are a lifesaver thanks!

I know you've heard this a lot, but THANK YOU! My husband went out and bought that same easel! Got home and no instructions! We tried putting it together ourselves too, but we have no engineers here at our household. He asked me to look at the display model whenever I went back to Michaels and see how they did it. I went back, but they didn't have it on display anymore. Went home and told him that he'll have to "google" it. He grumble and said that I probably missed the display and did not "google" it. Well, I'm going to put it together now and can't wait to see his reaction when he sees that it's done. Again THANK YOU!

Mine was DEFECTIVE. I thought for sure I could figure out how to put it together by myself... searched the internet and everything. The hole for the back leg was by the rubber bottom so no wonder I had issues. This is even harder to figure out when its not physically possible.

I knew someone else would have this same issue but I couldn't find a website with demonstration. Thank you. I have two of these and was about to give up.

Thanks so much for helping out with this mess. I had no idea what I was going to do. I normally don't read instructions past the contents of the box, to make sure everything is there. Then it is pictures all the way. In this case you can see anything to make out what screw goes where. So thanks again, you and your awsome wife. (women rule)

It looks like the easel in the pictures wasn't assembled properly. The top of two of the legs are angled at the top. When you're screwing the three legs together at the top, the angled edges should face each other with the third leg between them. That way, the two legs with the angled edges fit flush against the middle leg.

I really, very-very much appreciate your taking the time and trouble to provide us mechanically challenged individuals the means, and as it turned out, the remedy for our malady. Sometimes I take a rather dim view on life, like when knit-wits write, or rather, not don't write, directions for those of us who unwittingly fall into the trap of purchasing their products. You must have a superman cape around there somewhere, because you bust onto the scene this evening and saved the day, from those wretched clowns that take our money and leaver trails of blood in their wake. For that day, I give thanks, and a hearty, keep on truck-in (I know, I am now dating myself) by one that appreciates that effort.

Thank you so much. Like most I was extremely frustrated w/ the lack of instructions. You saved the day.

I bought a similar display from Michael's to show my Grandma's picture for her remembrance service. Thank you immensely for your help.

It's 2015 and people are still finding your instructions helpful. Thank you for taking the time to post this. I would have NEVER been able to assemble this easel without the help of your blog!

Unknown said...

Thanks! Mine came with "directions" but I couldn't just put it together with pictures alone! It's together now per your instruction! So, thank you very much!

Anonymous said...

Thanks you - You saved me a trip back to Hobby Lobby to take a picture of the display. May be the worst instructions I have ever seen.

Thank you! I figured out everything but the chain "hooking," that makes sense. Also, mine came with three laege tacks with rounded caps. I just realized they are for the bottom of each leg, to protect the floor from the wood scraping.

Thank you very much from August of 2016. I thought I was smart until I came across this puzzle. Thanks for the solution!
